If things don't change dramatically, climate change will send countries to war over water and food, and lead to a massive number of refugees roaming the planet.
That's one of the possible futures international affairs columnist Gwynne Dyer forecast on Friday during a stop in Greater Sudbury.
"All the evidence suggests the warming is moving considerably faster," Dyer said. "So, what is 2046 like? There is a global food crisis of enormous proportions. People are starving and people who don't plan to sit there and starve are moving across borders or being shot down as they cross borders ...
"You've got failed states where governments have collapsed. You probably have lost or are losing the Amazon, and you've made the southern United States and the Mediterranean uninhabitable."
Dyer's lecture, at the Fraser Auditorium on Friday, centred on his new book, Climate Wars, which has been made into a three-part series for CBC's Ideas.
