Geoengineering is far too dangerous to be implemented

Rajendra Pachauri, Chairman of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, IPCC Dear Dr. Pachauri, I am writing to demand that the United Nations and IPCC immediately cease consideration of funding geoengineering research, thus laying the groundwork for inevitable implementation of a human managed biosphere. You have no authority to surreptitiously be doing so. Your promise that it is only for research is unlikely to be kept as there have never been major new technologies that have been developed but not used. The way to avoid further ecocidal technologies is to NOT RESEARCH THEM IN THE FIRST PLACE. Thus, unless you are endorsing inevitable geoengineering implementation, the IPCC must not fund nor promote geoengineering research, or allow it to be legitimized further by inclusion in any IPCC assessments. It is not, nor will it ever be, possible to engineer global ecology. The impacts of geoengineering will surely have major unintended catastrophic consequences upon climate, ecosystems, and people; as complex systems react chaotically and non-linearly. Geoengineering offers a technological “fix” to the same governments and industries that created the climate crisis; and requires no social change or personal transformation away from inequitable over-consumption based upon liquidating ecosystems. Geoengineering is a dangerous distraction from the social, economic and political changes required to equitably confront climate change. Once geoengineering is embraced, we could never stop, or the carbon would be re-released. Those most likely to be affected are the poor with the least to lose. It shows tremendously poor judgment to begin such research, which is already distracting from ecology-based real solutions to tackling the problem. Failure could destroy Earth and thus humanity, so why take the risk? The human family is unable to control invasive species, build nuclear power plants that don’t leak, or keep oil from water; yet now humanity is going to engineer a livable biosphere - with stable climate, biodiversity and ecosystems - forever? The power to geoengineer lies only with rich nations and billionaires. It is risky and unpredictable, and serious unintended consequences are guaranteed. The Earth's ecosystems have all the answers and regenerative powers we need if we remove the ecocidal drain upon them - more industrial technology is NOT the answer. The IPCC would be better advised to focus upon immediate massive emission reductions, ending coal and other fossil fuels, energy conservation and efficiency, achieving 100% renewable energy, and protecting and restoring old forests and other natural ecosystems. We haven’t even tried in earnest to change society to massively reduce emissions, pushed for and led by example for more equitable consumption, and we haven’t even considered changing the government and economic growth system through massive people’s power protest or revolution. The answer to climate and ecological sustainability is more nature, and less technology. Instead, the United Nations appears to be deciding on its own to bet the whole planet that they can engineer the biosphere, and other foolish policy like considering "sustainable forest management" of primary forests as a climate solution under REDD+. These decisions will not stand, and the deep green resistance movement will use all means necessary to obstruct mad scientists from playing god and creating a Frankensphere. And again, for Gaia's sake, drop the intellectual dishonesty - if researched and developed, geoengineering will undoubtedly be implemented - almost certainly with further dire impacts to the human family from messing with global ecology.
