Tar sands is a huge, dirty secret, and the oil companies want to keep it that way. Its hugely important that we expose the truth on yet another form of dirty energy. Thanks for posting this here!

Dr. James Hansen warned in his presentation at the American Geophysical Union this past December:
"If we also burn the tar sands and tar shale (a.k.a. oil shale), I think [the runaway greenhouse effect] is a dead certainty."
That means a Venus-type scenario and an end to all life on planet earth. Click my name URL for the paper & see esp. page 24.

Our endless thirst for driving fuel must be reduced to make an impact on gas prices and tar sands development. I think of the Sierra Club and its endless promotion of trips and wilderness vacations to remote locations.
With ever increasing driving demand, crude prices will go back up and tar sands development As India and China industrialize these countries are consuming oil faster and faster. China has actually explored buying an interest in tar sands companies. This is not surprising since the bitumen holds an amount compared to the proven reserves of Saudi Arabia.

This is awful, and what's worse is that this remains to be a huge problem in the Middle East. Saudi Arabia has utilized tar sands for years to develop its oil trade. The primary reason Saudi Arabia has been moving away from a democratic government, as opposed to a few years ago where it was the opposite direction, is beacuse of petro-dictatorship. Oil makes up 70-80% of the country's revenue, and these tar sands contribute to this revenue while damaging the environment. One thing that would really help is if other countries would stop relying on these oil powerhouse countries for their own infrastructure.
