ALERT: Protest Australia's Continued Ancient Forest Logging in the Face of Abrupt Climate Change
Australia's new "climate friendly" government preaches global forest protection for climate benefits internationally, while continuing to industrially clear its own native primary forests in Tasmania and elsewhere, and this unseemly hypocrisy must end
TAKE ACTION: Australia continues to industrially clear their last native ancient forests [search], even as their government promotes forest protection internationally to combat climate change. Australia's new government led by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has ratified Kyoto [search], appears genuinely committed to global climate change policy, and speaks often of how Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and the world must protect primary forests to solve global climate change.
Yet in an act of unseemly doublespeak, the country that is perhaps most impacted by climate change continues to log its last centuries old trees found in ancient forest ecosystems vital for holding both carbon and water. Why is forest protection a good idea internationally but not for Australia's much reduced and climate impacted natural habitats? Australia's new government must be called upon to stop their hypocrisy and end logging of their own old growth forests as a keystone response to climate change, biodiversity loss and ecosystem sustainability.TAKE ACTION!

And thank goodness for the work of Rainforest Action Network! They have done more than any organization outside of Australia to fight the destruction of Tassie's forests. Their work to shift the market in Japan away from GUNNS Ltd though informational campaigns and industry/media/public conferences has had a remarkable result. You can support RAN's work by visiting www.ran.org/give and you can find out about this great organization's work here - www.treesnotgunns.org

Requiem
When the forests are gone and we can no longer breath- it will be too late.
When the eco-system that provides new medication are gone-it will be too late.
When the earth is swept by wind and rain and deserts fall where once were none.
It will be too late
When the skies weep sand
and the waters fail - for the sake of a tree.
It will be too late.
Ponder these things and dry your tears for that time has come and it is too late.

Hi All, Australia an other countries should be looking at climate zones as to which tree species will survive global warming and base their cutting/planting on these species. Protect/replant. W.

Friends,
Mark Latham had a firm policy on Tasmanian forests and Tasmania then kept him out of office - so that we had another period of John Howard. The point you make is correct, but politics is always the art of the possible. Kevin Rudd pulled his nose out of Tasmania, was elected, and is doing various worthwhile things. Whether, on a point of principle, it is worth risking putting the Libs back in again in 3 years is a moot question, it seems to me. Why not use your efforts to persuade Tasmanian forestry workers that the Latham plan was actually in their best interest and they should lean on Paul Lennon to change his policy away from dependence on financial support from Gunns?

Re Maunder Minimum and Little Ice age.
Europe was in the middle of multiple plagues. So people were not too interested in looking at Sunspots then, but were more concerned with the spots on their bodies!!

Hi Glen,
Bob Thompson here, in Victoria, Australia. Thanks much for the posting/alert about destruction of Tasmanian and Vic forests. I forwarded this to Jill Redwood at Environment East Gippsland (EEG), a fairly active local organisation, and I think she added to your blog about this issue.
I try to respond to issues that are in my main areas of interest, but, like most, I'm getting snowed under by emails. I was pleased about the Woodlark Island decision, after following up and sending my complaint to Prime Minister Somare in PNG.
Thanks for your good work on so many issues,
Bob

ALERT: Protest Australia's Continued Ancient Forest Logging in the Face of Abrupt Climate Change
Please note that I was advised this email (petition and comments) would be sent to the Australian Prime Minister when in fact I found it went to
Senator Chris Evans, Leader of the Government in the Senate, Minister for Immigration and Citizenship and Senator for Western Australia.
Please correct this error or we will all be wasting our efforts here.
The Minister for the Environment is The Hon Peter Garrett AM MP and the Minister for Climate Change and Water is Senator The Hon Penny Wong.
Kind regards
Bronwyn

The protest emails are being sent to Prime Minister Rudd via Australian embassies. This is necessary because Mr. Rudd like his predecessor does not see fit to maintain an email for comments to his office. The alert is being widely cc'ed to other Australian politicians including those you listed.
