ALERT: Call for Fast Tracking of New Strengthened post-Kyoto Agreement

TAKE ACTION: Given the science and evident abrupt climate changes, Kyoto successor agreement must be negotiated now that includes mandatory emissions reductions for all major emitting economies

More than 1,000 government delegates are now meeting in Bonn to try to break gridlock in international climate change negotiations amid widening public concern and widely evident global warming impacts. This is the first time government climate delegations have met since the U.N. sponsored Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) issued a spate of reports this year, drawing on the studies of some 2,500 scientists, which predict grim consequences of global warming if swift action is not taken. These climate change policy-makers must be challenged to develop a strengthened Kyoto regime as soon as possible that transitions the world to low carbon societies. Current Bonn talks are preparing for a meeting of environment ministers in Bali, Indonesia, in December. It is essential formal negotiations are launched in Bali to widen and strengthen the U.N.'s Kyoto Protocol as soon as possible. With the strengthened science, evident climate impacts now, and the rapidity of their advancement; negotiations must commence immediately, or at the latest in Bali in December, for a strengthened and expanded Kyoto system to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This can not wait until 2012 when the present Kyoto protocol expires. As was done to successfully address the ozone hole under the Montreal Protocol, timetables must be advanced and mandatory participation in emission cuts expanded if the world is not to burn. TAKE ACTION

Here is one well-reasoned response to our barrage of protest emails:

Dear Judith,

I would like to say that I appreciate your efforts but I will not. The reason is the following. I am receiving hundreds of messages with thisidentical text and it takes me quite some time to delete all them. It was similar last November before Nairobi when I received all together about2000 (two thousand) identical messages. Who the hell has given you the right to bother other people with such non-rational things. You certanilyon't get simpathy by doing that.

I konw that you are only one of those many crazy activists, and I will certainly not write to all the others. So it is clear that my message to you will not help, just I had to tell it to one of you.

Regards,

Right on, I am forwarding a lot of your global warming rants. Keep on kicking bootie. Dave

Glen, a note to tell you how helpful the alerts are, and if you don't often see me participating in the mass e-mail method of registering concern with responsible officials, it is not because I fail to takeaction, rather that the e-mail petition method is becoming overused by all sorts of interest groups such that recipients are less likely totake them seriously due to their commonplace nature (e.g. some institute junk mail filters). I usually compose a personalized letter stating myconcerns and use snail mail; if, as in the case of Barrick Gold, it is something with a connection to Canada, I write politicians directly as well. On most occasions I fax such letters to politicians for more rapid delivery and a record of its having been received.

i feel i can't sign this b/c it requires a carbon market and i don't see that that is a realistic or positive way of addressing the need to reduce co2.

For interest here is a youtube clip from todays International Climate Conference in London. The clip is of Jonathan Neale from CACC talking about the Dec 8th International Protest to coincide with the UN Climate talks in Indonesia.

Hello Climate Ark: I am a Communications student at the University of Washington writing a thesis paper on how newspaper media cover global warming & climate change, and also, public attitudes on global warming. Climate Ark is included in my study and I wanted to ask what your readership count is, approximately? Thank you.

A belgian green scientist Peter Tom Jones says a worldwide carbon swap system with everyone in the world starting with an equal amount of credit on his card is the ultimate solution for the problem. Joe, is this the thing were you are against. Explain. I want to pass you the website of mr.Jones.

A green scientists specialised in material design and ecological economics, Peter Tom Jones, from Belgian says that doing a universal swap giving everyone in the world a carbon credit card is the ultimate solution for this problem. Is it this you don't find positive, Joe? To me, it's seems to be much more social, honest and positive as continuing our actual economic system against all growing scientific knowledge.

Glen, thanks but we do consider all those political farts of meeting, head scratching and promising the biggest crime against humanity and if you want or not, there is absolutely no chance to revers or to stop a process already initiated 20 years ago. Pushing polititians is the meaningless action of desorientation because we have pushed since the 70s and nothing happend.
Smart civilians all over the world are starting to prepare themselves against rough climate changes but this is far not all happening in consequence of pollution. · days ago everybody talked about ozon holes and nothing happend, days ago it was reported the disappearing of 27 species in the mediterranean and nothing happend, today we talk temprature increase and again nothing happens but important peoples talk. If it wasnt for the innocent and helpless we also would say "eat the cake you made yourself" so we are in the middle of structurising survival areas already.
The increase of temprature and melting of poles and essential glaciers is a fact and the thermic piles builded up during decades will not disappear because carbondioxide emission may be reduced now. This issue is just sitting in the middle of a chain reaction and isnt their beginning nor is it their end.
You want to make the fools stop talking nonsens to the folk I am with you a 100%.
But the emergency sticks with survival plans and preparing. NOBODY really is aware of this as long as polititians and other delighted brains giving a percentage of hope to the people.
I just come back to verify the melting of a mayor glacier in Peru which delivers drinking water to the principal northern region of Peru, get yourself a airplane and watch Alaska where you can observe the sinking of 12 islands already (one disappeared already completely).... so what are you going to stop with pushing polititians to work once for all for the people whom are paying their generous salaries or fees.
Sea level may increase half a meter, so the european environment agency admitts. Double this and take on account that already 20cm is deadly to the biology know! Better tempratures in north europe and northern america? Well, water pushing through the hidraulic sistems and will turn half of the northern continent into swamp land... nothing to celebrate.
80% of all agricultural efforts are on sea level, so guess the danger will arrive from the hungry human...
But me too I am starting to talk in the middle of the chain. Lets start to talk about the first link which is the base to all life on earth: the massive mutations going on in our bacteries department for about 120 years delivering nice and unknown virus and non controlable deseases in nature for lets say 50 years already. Not listening we ended up now with ONE of many consecuences untold but yet it is not hard enough to change human ego behaviour into wider conscience and integral thinking.
So, I am sorry, we are not forming part to remember somebody of how to do his job but we will support any action against polititians and any civilian not willing to change his destructive attitude.
Lets denounce the principal presidents of the principal pollution countries for mass murder and you will see how quick they jump even if they are innocent and even if the juridical part is no solid ground.
All environment reports are known since the late 60s and there is nobody able to excuse his non action.
I am afraid to tell you that there is no more than 2 years left to get a safe place, 5 to reach extreme supply problems and maybe 10 to secure individual survival areas if not shot to dead before.
You maybe know better about earth and agriculture. So you may know that the european subground is polluted and that it would take 70 years to unpoison the ground by natural process.
Put this in relation to the global climate changes and than answer yourself the question: would there be a relief if all polluters would be shut down? Yes for those grandchildren whom are going to survive whats coming up.
Anyway all the best with your efforts

As you know Glenn the older you are the less likely the impact on one of climate change will be.

Certainly verities will disapppear and changes in climate will have direct costs but migration is only for descendants.

Evacuation of between 40dN and 40dS is impractical and with catastrophe population will collapse along with the natural resource bases. No end of human or finance capital can address survival without a productive natural resource base.

Therefore because I am at 41dS and 57 I will remain where I am rather than enlarging my carbon footprint by relocating to a still frozen continent.

This is one of the failings in the system. The decision makers are older and the impacts of change are unprecedented.

In our case one John Howard has a decade on me, is our version of a Republican fossil fool climate denier [indeed the parallells are scary, you would think the script was direct from the USA but one cannot find the evidence] and it will take generational change to get things moving along on climate.

As you business leaders have gone to Washington to push for change so have our gone to Canberra.

Without moving rapidly to zero anthropogenic ghg emissions the outcome looks bleak and one cannot imagine the behemoth turning around rapidly without the equivalent of a Pearl Harbour from the climate and I cannot see that happening in time to avoid the imapcts classed as dangerous.

Avoiding catastrophe from that point may be out of our hands or too difficult a cost for the over developed and over developing nations.

Thank you for your efforts, perhaps we will succeed, there certainly is a lot to loose for the wealthy.

It is unfortunate they reamin in a dream land led by that dreamer Gore. The one fortunate thing about his warning is it is now, coming from a peer, being taken more seriously, even if it is not taken seriously enough.

As focal point for France I have received a large number of messages from your campaign over the past few weeks - a quick count suggests around 800. For several days in Bonn, your messages blocked my e-mail completely and hindered my work as head of the French delegation and an EU negotiator trying to seek an agreement on action on climate change. A similar campaign around the time of the Nairobi conference last year led to my receiving even more messages - I do not know if your site was also responsible for that also.

Your motives and those of the individuals who take part in this campaign are no doubt good, but the results are not!

Maybe you think that the international negotiations on climate change are going nowhere and we should act in a different way. All I can say is that we will not succeed if we have to spend all day deleting this counter-productive spam.

So I am entirely in agreement with my friend and colleague Andrej Kranjc of Slovenia whose response to one of the messages he received is shown on your site.

Please find another way to involve the public in action on climate change and do not repeat this sort of totally counter-productive campaign in the future.

RESPONSE: As long as you and the UNFCCC remain so utterly ineffective you are legitimate targets for protest. Get to work doing the people's bidding on climate or step aside. Protests will continue. Actually it was more like 2,600 emails you received from many countries. People are concerned and have a right to express themselves.
