WASHINGTON, September 11, 2000 - A new report presents benchmark energy use and environmental data for the steel industry as a whole and at the process level for several of the industry's most energy-intensive products. The report titled Energy and Environmental Profile of the US Steel Industry was developed by the Department of Energy's Office of Industrial Technologies (OIT) in support of its Industries of the Future strategy for promoting energy efficiency.
OIT says by presenting current data for each major process in the steel industry, the report will serve as a valuable reference in technology planning. In addition to the energy and environmental data, the report includes process descriptions designed to provide an overview of the steel industry as a whole. Major processes covered include cokemaking, ironmaking, steelmaking (basic oxygen furnace and electric arc furnace), refining and casting as well as forming and finishing.
Drawing information from a variety of sources, the report characterizes air emissions, effluents and other residuals generated by each process, provides estimates of quantities, and describes existing treatment and control technologies.
