WebPosted Thu Sep 7 11:52:59 2000OTTAWA - Despite efforts to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases made in Canada, the country is still producing more air pollution each year.

But the government says at least the growth of emissions is slowing down.

Ottawa released figures Wednesday that show Canada's greenhouse gas emissions were 13 per cent higher in 1998 than in 1990.

The report also shows that emissions grew by only one per cent from 1997 to 1998. This is an improvement over the mid 1990s when emissions were growing at about three per cent per year.

The federal government submitted the figures to the United Nations in accordance with the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

The UN Kyoto Protocol sets specific reduction targets for countries. Canada's goal is to reduce greenhouse gases to six per cent below 1990 levels.
