WARSAW - The World Bank said yesterday it will co-finance a $97 million soft loan to Poland to develop environmentally clean energy resources.

The World Bank said in a statement it would grant $38 million for the project, which envisages building small geothermal and gas-fired heat generation plants in the southern mountain region of Podhale.

The scheme, which also provides for constructing a new heat distribution network in the tourist region, will also be financed by the European Union, the Danish government and other investors.

"The main goal of this project is to limit pollution by increasing the usage of clean energy sources," the World Bank said.

Since 1990 the World Bank has sponsored 31 projects in Poland totaling $5 billion worth of loans.
