WASHINGTON, June 29, 2000 - The largest appliance retailer and biggest appliance manufacturer have unveiled a new energy efficient clothes washer that could save an average family $100 in energy and water costs and over 7,100 gallons of water each year.

According to a Department of Energy announcement praising the new machine, the new Kenmore Elite Calypso washer - built by Whirlpool and sold by Sears - has the largest capacity of any residential washer on the market today and meets federal guidelines for energy and water savings, qualifying for the Energy Star label. The Department noted that if all US families used Energy Star clothes washers, more than $6.7 billion would be saved each year in water and energy costs.

The Energy Star program is a partnership between the Department of Energy, the US Environmental Protection Agency, manufacturers, retailers and utilities nationwide, promoting the development and sale of high-quality energy efficient products. The Energy Star program currently has 62 utility industry partners, more than 1,200 manufacturing partners, and more than 4,600 retail partners.
